Frequently asked questions
Packet loss is the percentage of ping requests that never received a reply. Occasional loss can be normal; consistently high loss usually indicates a network problem between you and the host.
Some servers and firewalls intentionally block ICMP (ping) traffic while still serving normal web traffic on ports 80/443 - an unreachable ping doesn't always mean the service itself is down.
About the Ping tool
Ping sends a small number of ICMP echo requests to a host and reports whether it responded, how long each reply took (round-trip time), and what percentage of requests were lost - a quick first check for network connectivity problems.
